Poignant and critically acclaimed documentary that reveals the community of New York's minority gay black and Latino drag queens who invented the dance style of "voguing.” The subjects band together into family-like "houses" for protection, taking the same last names and competing in drag balls where awards are given out for authenticity or "realness," as well as other categories. The fashion balls become the social locus of this underground society of outcasts defiantly refusing to be ignored by a world that scorns them. |
|
Award winning experimental music video documentary politicizes homoeroticism of African American men. With images—sensual, sexual and defiant – and words intended to provoke, Anthem reasserts the “self-evident right” to life and liberty in an era of pervasive anti-gay, anti-Black backlash and hysterical cultural repression.

CARMELITA TROPICANA
Dir. Ela Troyano

A typical American family car for an atypical American family, it provides the women at first with all the familiar comforts. But when their relationship ends, the car becomes the property of one and the bane of the other's existence. Even long after their separation, this tangible reminder of their life together continues to prowl the streets of the city, haunting the woman who no longer holds the keys either to the car or the other woman's heart. |
A short feature film which portrays an event-filled day in the life of its Latina performance artist Carmelita Tropicana. La Tropicana's experiences, as a single woman and lesbian supporting herself as a building "super" on New York's Lower East Side, are embellished with humorous monologues and a novella-style melodrama, with fantasy musical production numbers. |
